Home today and working on a few old quilt bears. I'm using the back of the quilt and its this great vintage homespun. I have one finished and one in the works. Its hard on the hands, hand sewing thru 4 layers of fabric and 2 layers of batting. For some reason I like sewing them by hand. I need to learn how to work a timble I'm sure it would help. Back to sewing ............

Finally finished. Made by me using a design by Crows Roost Prims, my latest primitive handmade snowman. He's made of osnaburg and just a darling. I used old quilt for his hat then painted it black and sanded. Painted cheese cloth for a scarf. Handstitched facial features and buttons down the front. No Friday Finish this week. I have been trying all week to get my machine adjusted so I can make button holes on my red ticking pillow shams. I'm bad about directions who needs them sooner or later I figure it out. Well I finally had to find my sewing machine book. I knew after messing with it for a few days I was missing something well I didn't have one dial turned the right way. Should of found the book first and I could of saved myself alot of time. I hate button holes so I was in no hurry. I think I almost have my machine adjusted but now its just way to late to start. I can bearly see straight as it is. I'll wait until the morning and get a fresh start on them.

Dying Dish Towels ............

I'm home today working on dying cotton homespun dish towels. I ended up using Ritz Tan Dye. I used a big pot as you can see filled with hot water and then I add the dye and some table salt. Then I turn the burner on and heat the water until its really really hot then I turn off the heat and let sit half and hour rinse and then dry in the dryer. I'll post later when dried and folded.

I'm working on a few burlap pumpkins after seeing this blog post for inspiration. I changed mine up a bit. Burlap is a bit tricky to work with since it unravels and if following this pattern and using burlap you don't turn the edge under. Warning making pumpkins can be addicting.

Here's my latest bear all finished and ready for his new home. He's listed in my ETSY SHOP. Please visit him there for more details. This is the bear pictured below in my last post. They look totally different when they dry and get sanded don't they. The heavy coffee dye helps firm up the fraigile fabric along with giving it its color. I love the end results.

I have made many a pumpkin but never out of old quilt. This is a granny's flower garden quilt from the 40's and I used the back. I love quilts that are useable on both sides. Where the front is dry and rotted the back is perfect and look at all the hand quilting. I just listed them in my Etsy shop.

All finished. I made her using a old blanket. Yes I said her. Most of my bears seem to be boys to me maybe because I have boys but this is a girl bear. Her name is Holly named by my youngest. Today I'm working on a 14 inch jointed bear and I'm using a old/vintage blanket. I used burlap for the paw pads. I'm working from home and had to use what I had on hand. I think it works. Working with the blanket was a bit of a challenge because the blanket has some stretch to it. So I have to be careful not to over stuff. Who me? Never .... I'll post again when finished.

This is the smallest old quilt bear I've made to date. I have 4 hours into making him and I used a pattern by Brian and Donna Gibbs. Standing only 5 inches tall. Handsewn and string jointed. He's been giving a coffee bath and is dying nicely. When dry I'll take some sandpaper to him and then he'll be ready for his new home. I'll post him again when I list him.

Today I'm working on finishing up the bears I made since last weeks post using a design by Sweet Meadows Farm. They are waaaaaaay cuter in person. I'm in the process of sanding them. They are made from painted plush felt and the sanding really brings them to life. Don't know if you can tell in the picture but the ones on the right have been sanded. I'll post them again when finished. I'm thinking they might need a handstamped OLDE BEAR tag. All made using the same pattern all have their own look. Each is a one of a kind.

I just finished up another big old quilt bear. The first one I made the darker of the two I'm not happy with. I love him I just don't like his joints. I tried to alter the plastic joints I had by adding a 4 inch disc but due to the weigh the joints aren't strong enough. His limbs are sagging and just not tight enough to the body for me. So tomorrow I'm going to operate on him and cut his arms and legs off and start over. My people made me the discs to use and I had to get metal washers and cotter pins so I'll have to re join him together. The other bear is finished he just need his coffee bath. I'll post them again when finished.

Just abit ago I finished up the largest bear I've ever made. He stands 2 feet tall. I'm pretty happy with him. This is him before and after his coffee bath. I left him standing to dry so he will dry even. I'll let him dry overnight and in the morning if I'm happy with him I'll take some sand paper to him and then he'll be ready for a new home. I'll post him again when finished.

I woke up to find this woodpecker at my window. I thought maybe she was stuck to the screen but when I opened the window she flew away. I love the woodpeckers except when they are pecking on my log house.

Today I'm working on the largest old/vintage quilt bear I've ever made, standing 24 inches tall. I did all the sewing by hand over the last three days. Its hard on the hands sewing thru two layers of quilt but I love the results. The hand sewing just makes him that much more special to me. I need my people to cut me disc so I can enlarge the bear joints I have. The biggest bear joints I have are 2.5 inches (the biggest they make) and I need 3 inch for his head and 4 inch from his limbs. I told you he was big. His arm measures 14 inches long. I'll have to be patience until my people get home from work. Until then I'm going to start on a few small bears. I love making bears. I'll post my progress.

The bowl his head is sitting in is 12 inches across. Big I tell you big.

Today I'm working on my website and shoveling. Yes shoveling, its snowing here and we have about 6 inches so far. So I crop a picture or two, upload them then I shovel awhile. Today I arrived home to find my ticking order here. WOO HOO! I received a few new colors Sky Blue, Black and Potting Soil Brown. I restocked the favorites red and taupe. I'm bummed because blue was out of stock. This is a nice medium weight ticking with tons of uses. I have it listed in my Etsy Shop and I'm working on getting it also listed on my website.

I'm working on making bears from this blanket/coverlet that belonged to my grandmother Katherine from whom I was named after. It was given to me by my mother 20 plus years ago. It must of meant alot to my mom to of held on to it. It looks well used and loved. I thought I best get busy and turn it into something before something happened to me and it ended up tossed, so whats better than a memory bear.

My Cutter Quilt Stash

This is just a part of cutter quilt stash. I have them rolled and stacked in a corner of my raggedy room at the shop. You can get alot in alittle space by rolling them. Not the best picture, sorry. I grabbed a few to bring home and wash. Going to be making more handmades with them. I'm bad and feel that I have to rescue each and every cutter quilt I see. Well someone has too. To all who have asked these are all full size quilts that haven't been cut and just a part of my stash. Once I cut a quilt a usually sew up the whole quilt. I even save the scraps and use them for stuffing. I waste nothing.

I had a few issues with them as the coffee I was used to dye them turned them black. Well then it was back in the sink and under the water for them then out on the deck to dry. I had to rinse and dry them several times before I was happy with them. Sometimes old quilt takes bad to dye. You never know. Alls well that ends well. They will looking for their new homes at my retail shop, on my WEBSITE and in my ETSY SHOP.

I'm working on making a dozen rolled antique quilt prairie dolls. I'm using a design by Sweetpea's Primitives. No sewing machine is used all sewn by hand. I have 7 sewn with 5 to go. Its hard on my hands sewing thru two layers of quilt but I love the results.

Today I've been working on my double heart pin keeps. I'm using a design by Cat Nap Primitives. I used old feedsack and ticking. As soon as they are dry I'm going to sand abit and then trim with a few rusty pins and bells. I'll post again when finished.

WOO HOO! This evening I arrived home to find my fabric ordered had arrived. I love fabric in case you couldn't tell. I have always bought fabric for myself for crafting and over the years I managed to collect alittle over 300 bolts. I'm bad I think I have to have it all and I don't just want a yard or two I want the whole bolt. Well now that I started selling fabrics I want them all too and my one supply house has 150 different homespuns. This order was 2 boxes 18 bolts. 10 bolts are already in stock and 8 are new. I'm working on getting them all and it will take awhile. I try to keep my stock up and add a few new ones every order. I'll post them as I get them listed.

Here's a few of my old quilt heart offerings I finished and listed today in my ETSY SHOP. Some I coffee dyed and some I didn't. Some I added vintage buttons to and others a rusty bell and safety pin. Some I added to mini colanders (I just love them) and some I handstamped tags for. I love working with old quilt.

OLD COVERLET BEARS .........

I ended up making 36 old quilt hearts yesterday. And I told myself before I can work on finishing them I need to list my old coverlet bears. So here they are ....

I listed one of each on my WEBSITE and in my ETSY SHOP. I also was lucky enough to be able to keep one for myself. I have already found a place for him. Off to watch "Days" and work on finishing up my hearts. I'll post them when finished.

I'm all finished with my americana baby shoe pinkeeps. I love repurposing and having something I can make with all the single baby shoes I find here and there. I think I have to have them all. I often wonder who once wore them and the stories they could tell. I'll be listing them on my website and in my Etsy shop today and tomorrow. I really like the victorian baby shoes I don't see them often. I had to add bb's to them to give them alittle weight so they would sit right. Each is truely a one of a kind.

Making Old Coverlet Bears .......

Today I'm working on old coverlet bears and watching Nascar. Nascar is at least 3 hours of prime sewing time. I just love Sundays. I have been making these all week and I have 3 bears done in blue and now I'm making a few in red and blue coverlet. This is the first one I'm stuffing with rags well not really muslin scraps. They look funny before they get their faces. I'll post them again when finished. GO JIMMY! GO!
